Meet the experts 

 

Dr. Piyumi Wijewickrama graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka, in 2012. Following a year as a research assistant in the Department of Medicine at the University of Colombo, she began her medical career at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka, Colombo. Dr. Wijewickrama started her postgraduate training in Medicine in 2015, successfully earning her MD from the University of Colombo in 2018. Driven by a longstanding passion for endocrinology, she began her subspecialty training in Diabetes & Endocrinology in 2018 at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka, home to the country's largest Diabetes and Endocrine Centre.

In September 2020, as a part of her subspecialty training, Dr. Wijewickrama moved to the UK, where she worked as a Senior Clinical Fellow in Diabetes & Endocrinology at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. She considers this a pivotal moment in her career, as it provided extensive experience in the field of endocrinology, as well as being a stepping stone to a new healthcare system. In October 2021, she joined University College London Hospitals NHS Trust as a Senior Clinical Fellow in Diabetes & Endocrinology, further enhancing her expertise. By February 2022, having completed all requirements, Dr. Wijewickrama was board certified as a Consultant Endocrinologist in Sri Lanka.

With the experience she gained both from Sri Lanka and the UK, she pursued the CESR pathway, submitting her application for specialist registration in July 2023, and successfully achieving GMC specialist registration in Diabetes & Endocrinology in April 2024.

Dr. Wijewickrama has a robust research background, with extensive publications in esteemed journals and presentations at both national and international forums. She has actively contributed to service development projects, audits, as well as development of local and national guidelines, in both the UK and Sri Lanka.

Currently, Dr. Wijewickrama serves as a Consultant in Diabetes & Endocrinology at Epsom & St. Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust, where she leads the inpatient Diabetes services. She is passionate about service development and quality improvement projects, as well as teaching and supervising medical students, junior doctors, and trainees, and is dedicated to provide optimum patient care, while guiding the next generation of medical professionals.

 

 

Professor Miles Levy, Consultant Endocrinologist, University Hospitals of Leicester. Professor Levy was appointed Consultant Endocrinologist at University Hospitals of Leicester in 2005 and is currently an Honorary Professor at Leicester University. Professor Levy's research interests include the genetics of endocrine tumours, functional imaging in endocrine tumours and the association of pituitary tumours and headache. Miles is the CRG Lead Endocrinology for Midlands and East, and Training Programme Director for Diabetes and Endocrinology East Midlands South. Professor Levy has an active role within the Society is currently a member of Council and was previously a member of both the Clinical Committee and Public Engagement Committee, a Media Advisor for the Society and was the Editor in Chief for You and Your Hormones, the Society’s public-facing website. 

 

 

Dr Isabel Huang Doran is a Wellcome Clinical Research Career Development Fellow at the University of Cambridge and Honorary Consultant Endocrinologist at Cambridge University Hospitals. She completed medical and research training in Cambridge, on the MB/PhD programme. After foundation jobs in London, She then returned to Cambridge as an Academic Clinical Follow, subsequently completing a NIHR Clinical Lectureship alongside specialty training in Diabetes & Endocrinology. Her research interests lie in the reproductive and endocrine consequences of obesity and metabolic disease. She is also a fellow of Christ’s College, Cambridge, where she supervises medical students in endocrinology and reproduction.
