Meet the experts

Dr Amar Puttanna is a Diabetes and Endocrine Consultant in the West Midlands and National Advisor for NHS Engagement for Sanofi UK.

"I'm particularly interested in education, having won teaching awards from the University of Birmingham and the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and currently sits on the MRCP Part 1 examining board. I have previously worked with the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) as well as BMJ online on their e-learning platforms. In 2018 I received an Excellence in Patient Care Award from the Royal College of Physicians for contribution to the profession.


I've been involved in writing guidelines including those on older adults with diabetes with the Joint British Diabetes Societies (JBDS) and guidelines/patient leaflets on diabetes and dementia with TREND, as well as local guidelines in Birmingham. I also sit on the editorial board for the British Journal of Cardiology and is a known national and international speaker in diabetes.

My interests include cardiovascular disease, diabetes management in older adults, sustainability in healthcare and translating research into clinical practice. I've also work in cognitive impairment (DIADEM project) has won a Quality in Care award in 2018".

 

Dr Angelica Sharma is an Academic Clinical Fellow in Endocrinology (East of England).

"I graduated from Cardiff University in 2020 where I developed an interest in Diabetes & Endocrinology during medical school and was awarded a Welcome Trust INSPIRE scholarship to undertake research on care provision for individuals with type 1 diabetes. I completed an intercalated BSc in Endocrinology at King’s College London with research focusing on diabetes-related foot disease for which I was awarded first class honours. As an academic foundation doctor at Imperial College London, I produced work on using cardio-metabolic risk factors to predict dementia diagnosis in individuals with type 2 diabetes and prednisolone replacement in adrenal insufficiency. Currently, I'm an Academic Clinical Fellow in Endocrinology in East of England and is continuing work on diabetes-related foot disease and diabetic ketoacidosis.

As a Young Diabetologist and Endocrinologist Forum (YDEF) pre-specialty representative I am keen on organising academic events, widening access to research opportunities, and promoting collaboration in academia amongst junior doctors".

 

Dr Lauren Quinn, MBChB, BMedsci, MRCP is a clinical research fellow at the University of Birmingham.

"I am a clinical research fellow specialising in the immunoprevention of type 1 diabetes. I believe in a world where type 1 diabetes can do no harm and my career is dedicated to working towards prevention.

My doctoral fellowship is establishing the largest type 1 diabetes screening programme in the UK for children aged 3-13 years"
